my favourite books
The list is far from complete! I probably won't mention all the nice books I liked and a lot are in German. They will not be included in the list unless there is a Norwegian or English version of them. I also often find myself in a situation where I piece together information from different books, pick out the tidbits and write them down in my journal. In that case, I would not recommend one of the single books as it clearly did not give me enough satisfactory information on its own.

gardening (only norwegian books)
My way of learning most about growing vgetables was to work on a farm that had organic vegetable production and to visit different gardeners around. There is only one book I have and it is in German, the rest are websites which I will collect in another post. There are an incredible number of gardening books and most of them are probably absolutely superb. The problem is that I have found almost no books intended for cultivation in H6 and above(cold mountain climate). With the exception of this one, and that's just one of many reasons why I love it:
foraging (only norwegian books)
All four are very comprehensive and the content regarding the plants is quite similar, so I think that one of them is enough. They each have their own characteristics, so just choose the one that best suits your needs. I haven't tried any of the recipes, and would actually have preferred a book that focused only on the actual foraging, but that's just my personal preference.
herbal medicine (only norwegian books)
In this category, I have read countless books. I will only list those that I have secured a place on my bookshelf and that I use frequently.
MEDISINPLANTER I NORGE helsebringende vekster i naturen ‑ Rolv Hjelmstad
GeiteholD & ysting
I personally cannot recommend "geiteboka" for small-scale hobby goat keeping. In my opinion, the book is aimed mainly at productivity and the focus is not on the animals themselves. In Norway, it is also difficult to find something that is adapted only to goats. When it comes to mineral supplements and the like, you take cattle and goats together and then the focus is on cattle, otherwise the sheep and goat principle applies, while the part for of sheep is almost exclusively dominant. Even if sheep and goats have a lot in common, they still do not have the same needs and not even the same food spectrum if they are allowed to choose freely. But it is not only in Norway that it is difficult to get good information about goat keeping by my standards. In the end, I have only one book that I can recommend with a clear conscience, but it is worth its weight in gold.
HOLISTIC GOAT CARE A Comprehensive Guide to Raising Healthy Animals, Preventing Common Ailments, and Troubleshooting Problems ‑ Gianaclis Caldwell
The main criticism is that the book is written for people in the USA and thus some of the information about the legislation, resources, plants etc. aren't relevant in this country. Nevertheless, I think that it outweighs that by offering such comprehensive and detailed information about basically everything related to goats. At the same time, it is written very well and understandable, also for someone like me who doesn't have much vocabulary in English about animal anatomy and medicine in general.
THE ART OF NATURAL CHEESEMAKING Using Traditional, Non-Industrial Methods and Raw Ingredients to Make the World's Best Cheeses ‑ David Asher
It's my cheese bible! The book offers everything I could wish about cheese making and it is written in a very easy to understand way. There is only one slightly annoying shortcoming and that is that the measurement units for salt are indicated in ml instead of grams.
Selvberging & beredskap
I find it difficult to find a good book in this category that contains everything I want to know. The reason is probably that there is so much worth mentioning that it is impossible to include everything in one book. However, when an author tries it, I find that it lacks depth and enough information for me to feel that it is satisfactory. My conclusion is that it pays off to read books on the various aspects. If you want an overview and a pleasant introduction to the topic of self-sufficiency, I can recommend this:
SELVFORSYNING I PRAKSIS alt du trenger å vite ‑ Maria Österåker
the complete guide to SAVING SEEDS ‑ Robert Gough and Cheryl Moore-Gough
I think that taking saving seeds is one of the most important things when it comes to both self-sufficiency and preparedness. When you grow some of your own food and collect the seeds, you have already achieved a lot of independence. But I also think that it is just so much fun to be able to complete a circuit in my garden.
I bought this book late in the autumn and thus had not had the opportunity to test it yet. But it looks very promising. I don't like expressions like "complete guide" etc. and it is certainly not complete but very comprehensive and detailed.
Inspirasjon
BRAIDING SWEETGRASS Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants ‑ Robin Wall Kimmerer
What a wonderful book. It has moved and touched me a lot - in such a fine and beautiful way. Maybe you have to be a bit of a plant nerd to love it as much as I do. But she is so good at painting beautiful pictures with words that I think this book is absolutely beautiful in every way. A quote on the front describes this book perfectly: "a hymn of love to the world" (Elisabeth Gilbert). And I would say that the book tries to build a bridge between the modern and scientific world and the nature inside and around us.
All time favourites
All the books in this category have in common that they are uplifting, funny and/or full of fantasy and magic ‑ because that's what I want to be surrounded by. There are far more that would fit in here! I have only tried to limit myself to some of those that mean the most to me.
MOMO ‑ Michael Ende
I have to admit that I have not read either the Norwegian or the English edition. I grew up with the German original and feel that it is the "real" one for me. But read it anyway! it is such a beautiful tale. Now I have read it a number of times, always a few years apart. It fascinated me that I see/find something different in the book every time I read it depending on my current situation and the picture of the world I have at that time.
RONJA THE ROBBER'S DAUGHTER ‑ Astrid Lindgren
Well well well what a surprise. But it is perhaps somewhat surprising that I am not actually named after her. But the fact that I grew up in a region that had been known for a band of robbers who lived there, as well as that I have always looked a bit like her in the film and, not least, my connection to mountains and forests probably means that the name was quite appropriate anyway. While I disliked being called Ronja the robber's daughter as a child, I take it as a compliment nowadays.
PIPPI LONGSTOCKING - Astrid Lindgren
HARRY POTTER ‑ J. K. Rowling
The books are not on the list because I find them so very inspiring, etc. But I had to include them because they mean so much to me. I got the first book as an audiobook for Christmas when I was eleven and since then the Harry Potter world has been a refuge for me. I don't watch the movies because they spoil my imagination and this year alone I have listened to the audiobooks at least 5 times. They helped me through my darkest times and even to learn Norwegian. I don't know if they can give the same to others or if they just found me at the right moment. In any case, I hope that you have or find a universe in which you can escape when needed.
MY GRANDMOTHER ASKS ME TO TELL YOU SHE'S SORRY & A MAN CALLED OVE -Fredrik Bakman EN MANN VED NAVN OVE ‑ Fredrik Backman
I like those two best of Backman's books, but I like them all. I just want to warn about the Bear town books - they are good but a completely different style and not full of humor but rather dark. I have some difficulty pinpointing exactly what it is that I like so much about his books. Not because there is so little to like, but perhaps precisely because I like the whole package.
TONJE GLIMMERDAL ‑ Maria Parr
Finfin bok!
NEMI (comic book) ‑ Lise Myhre
Nemi has gone with me through a darker period and felt like a light in the darkness. She has so many facets and can be both playful and funny but also lonely, sad and serious. It helped me a lot to accept all my sides and it was good to know that I am not alone in the darkness. At the moment, I like the nerdy Nemi best, who is passionate about what she likes regardless of what others think of it.
